Australian magpie
Gymnorhina tibicen
Distribution: NSW, Vic,
eastern South Australia, south west WA, coastal ranges of Qld

We target you: We seem to get particularly infuriated by bicycles:
nearly half of those attacked were riding a bike at the time. Two thirds of
our victims were male, and half of all those attacked were aged between
10-30.
When will you see us:
We begin breeding in July and this lasts through until the chicks fledge in
February. Most attacks occur between August and November when the chicks are
in the nest!

Western Hwy near Anthony's
Cutting: A whole family nest along that strip. Try and watch the
shadow of your helmet on the road, and as the shadow of the bird and the
shadow of the helmet merge, duck! Smarter than your average bird :) |

Morack Road outside Vermont
Secondary College and normally strikes when traveling toward Boronia
Road. I had a wracking yesterday by a magpie I thought was brought
down by the council a while ago. On this particular instance, I was on
an evening ride and at that point of time on my mobile, and the magpie
found this being the best time to strike. Strike it did, with a force
to be reckoned with. A force large enough for the person on the
receiving end of the call, to say "What was THAT!?!?" ~ James G |

Harp Rd Kew along bike path
/ walking path - might be called Valerie Rd in this section. A well
known hot spot for vicious magpies for many years. I think 'son of
magpie' is possibly even more vicious. Have been known to peck face.
Avoid by going down side street if possible. Seem to be bad around path
leading up to hill. Once half way down hill to chandler hwy you have
made it! ~Linda |

Byron St Canterbury (this
is the continuation of Maling Rd). Particularly terrifying as tries
to peck through helmet holes. Placed sticky tape over holes and stuck
on eyes as suggested. Still terrifies me when it swoops. ~ Linda |

Hight Street
Extension after Stud Road on the way to the Burwood Hwy intersection
just after the school crossing. This magpie is a real Stuka but
without the dive bomber siren! ~

Heading down Canterbury
Road from Box Hill just before Canterbury rail bridge, at 55km/hr,
hit hard from behind on the helmet and right shoulder - what was
that??!! - the rail bridge saved me!!

Corner of
Springvale Rd and Paterson Rd (Red Rooster). As you ride toward the
beach, it would come from behind and clean you up. ~ James G |

Maroondah HWY and Deep Creek Roads. As most
cyclists are aware, most swoop, but this one "connects". The best it
has achieved off me is rip a chunk out of my Limar F107 helmet and
removed the "L" as well. Bloody Pies.... Go Dons! ~ James G |

Frankston-Dandenong
Road near the Springvale freeway overpass. Got bitten on the nose
and then repeatedly swooped by the most savage magpie ever seen. Only my
bike pump saved me! ~
